I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time browsing Wikipedia. A while back, I noticed that if I clicked on links for long enough, that I always seemed to end up on a page related to either Jesus Christ or Abraham. Not being a particularly religious individual—and therefore not purposely researching religous topics—I found this rather curious. So I investigated the apparent phenomenon which I had come to consider "Wikipedia's Kevin Bacon-like obsession with Jesus," and found that there is apparently a known pheonomenon in which a large number of pages ultimately link to the Philosphy page, though apparently, as of 4 April 2012, fewer link to the Philosophy page and a large number now eventually end up at the Truth page. So I figured I'd take it one step further and conduct a "scientific" survey of pages to find out how many "degrees" separated an average page from the page on Jesus Christ. After manually (i.e. without using an automated "shortest link" finder) finding my way through various randomly selected pages back to the Jesus page fairly quickly, I thought, Hmmm... what's one of the oddest pages I can think of? I looked around the living room and saw my kid's Pokémon DVDs, so I tried that—TWO degrees! (Pokémon --> Christianity --> Jesus)
That was the deciding page—at that point, I decided I had to create a site about this apparent obsession Wikipedia has. OK, ok, admittedly, it's probably western civilization that has the obsession, and Wikipedia is just a mirror, but if you want to get into a philosophical argument about that minor detail, head on over to the Philosophy page's Talk section! ;)
There are at least 2744 pages which link directly (1 degree) to the Jesus page. Here's a list of them.
I'm working on a better way to display the entire database of links, but in the meantime, here are some more paths that you'd really think would take longer than they do to wind their way to a relious figurehead. None of these paths go through the Philosophy page (which, curiously, is actually two degrees away from Jesus, rather than the one I would have thought it would be)... that would be too easy!
Note: None of these links are censored, I'm not responsible for you clicking on something that is NSFW or that might sear your brain forever. I provide no eye bleach. ;) So if you think you might be offended by any content on Wikipedia, you should probably just go away now and hide in a safe place.
